Welcome to the faculty of Business and Law!
As your Student Advice Centre team we are here to support you throughout your studies with De Montfort University. We are located on the ground floor of the Hugh Aston Building so please do come and say hello if there is anything you need.
To get you started you can find the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions below. We hope that this helps, but please do let us know if you have anything else you need help with.
There is also lots of help available to you on the ASK BAL Website, and in our dedicated International Student Support Hub.

If you need help the most important thing you can do is talk to us.

There is a lot of help available to you from DMU, whether that is help with your work, help with finances, help with your mental health, and much more.

If you ever feel like you need help please speak to us in the Student Advice Centre as soon as possible. If we can help you, we will. If there is another team or colleague that can help you better, we will put you in touch with them.

We are here to help you from the start of your studies all the way through to your graduation, so please contact us with any questions or concerns that you have.

You can find our contact details here – Contact – ASK BAL De Montfort University

Classes for your first block start the week starting 31st March 2025.

There will then be a three week Easter break, where there will be no formal teaching. Support will still be on campus during this time, and we will contact you about any further events that take place during this time.

You should aim to attend all of your classes, however we do understand that sometimes there will be events, such as illness, which stop you from attending.

In order to ensure that you are recieiving the knowledge you need, and that your grades are not impacted, you should be attending a minimum of 80% of your classes.

No.

Our courses are designed to be taught face-to-face, and studying online would mean that you miss out on a lot of teaching and learning that will be valuable for your studies and your future career.

For international students, attendance is also a condition of your visa.

You are expected to attend your classes in person, and non-attendance would see students contacted in line with our Attendance Monitoring Policy.

You will recieve your timetable by Friday 28th March 2025.

Once your timetable is available you will be able to access this through the “Timetable” tile on MyDMU.

Please remember that you will have needed to complete face-to-face registration before you can recieve your timetable.

Due to the number of Change of Timetable requests we receive, we are not able to accept each one.

The reasons we would consider a change of timetable are:

  • You are a carer

  • You have childcare responsibilities

  • You have a health / medical problems

  • You are part of DMU sports team and play on Wednesdays

If your reasons fall into these categories you can request a change through the ASK BAL site – Timetable – ASK BAL De Montfort Univeristy (dmu.ac.uk)

Please note that changes depend on other sessions being available. We will also need to make sure there is space in these classes, therefore changes are not guaranteed to be accepted.

The deadline to request a change is the end of week 2 of the module in question.

We will inform you of the outcome of your request as soon as we are able.

Once you have completed your face-to-face registration you will be able to access Wi-Fi while you are on campus. The DMU student Wi-Fi is called Eduroam.

You can find instructions on how to connect to the Wi-Fi here – Connecting to eduroam – Overview

You will be able to find your personal tutors details on the “Personal Details” tab on MyDMU.

Please allow 10 working days after registering for your personal tutors details to be given to you.

DMU do not provide student railcards ourselves, however you can find more information about railcards on the trainline website – 16-25 Railcard | Buy Student Railcard for Only £35 with Trainline

Please note the steps below all students should follow if wishing to change programme:

1. Seek academic advice – your current Programme Leader or Personal Tutor. Ensure you meet the entry requirements of the new course and speak to the new Programme Leader.

2. Seek funding advice (email sfw@dmu.ac.uk) if needing to study an additional year. International students should seek advice from immigrationcompliance@dmu.ac.uk.

3. Please be aware of the timeline as outlined in the Academic regulations and recognition of prior learning (dmu.ac.uk). You may be required to interrupt your studies (leave of absence) or complete/pass your current programme before changing programe.

4. Complete The Form: Change of Programme Form

5. International students only: both the Accepting Programme Leader and Immigration Compliance must approve– if a new visa or CAS is required you may need to reapply to change programme at a later date.

The deadline to change your course is the end of week 2. No course changes can be processed after that date

To register your attendance you will need to tap your card against the card reader as you enter the class. The card reader is a small black box on the wall by the door.
